Rule of Law and Reforms Discussed at Working Group 4 Session

The Working Group 4, for Justice, Freedom, and Security (Chapter 24), held on Thursday the 13th session, where among the recommendations discussed were changing the Criminal Code, vision, political resolve, and consensus to implement difficult reforms.

At the session headlined “Fundamental Rights, justice, and Freedoms through the Prism of the EU’s Rule of Law Mechanism”, held in Skopje, Kristian Turkalj, a legal expert for the Western Balkans, who was part of Croatia’s team for EU negotiations, stated that for there to be an accelerated EU path, resolve and consensus on reforms was needed.

“In my view, what’s key is the vision, resolve of the political elite in North Macedonia, consensus by the main actors for that to be trully wanted so that difficult reforms are implemented,” he stated.

The Working Group’s Coordinator, university professor Aleksandra Deanoska Trendafilova, said the main message was people were aware the law situation was being monitored and a rule of law mechanism should be studied.
