BPPO Investigates Case with “Zan Mitrev” with Hospital-Acquired Infections

The Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office (BPPO) has filed a case against cardiologist Zan Mitrev and the eponymous private hospital in Skopje he is the founder and manager of, after the publication of the documentary film of the Research Reporters’ Laboratory (IRL) published on Sunday 17 July 2022. According to the documentary of IRL, which is based upon testimonies of 24 families from North Macedonia and Kosovo whose relatives were treated for COVID-19 in “Zan Mitrev”, the patients in question were included in a clinical research about the procedure for hemofiltration and its effects over COVID-19, without the clinic informing them or their families about this. Several patients contracted very dangerous and lethal bacteria during this treatment, like staphylococcus aureus, pseudomonas aeruginosa, acinetobacter baumannii and other similar bacteria, which may have been the cause of death among several patients. The clinic neither included these bacteria in the final reports about the patients, nor informed the Public Healthcare Institute about any of the hospital-acquired infections.
