Zaev: Adoption of Law on PPO should not be conditioned with Snap Elections

PM Zoran Zaev says that the adoption of the new Law on Public Prosecution should not be conditioned with demands for snap parliamentary election. “We do not support the idea for snap elections. We are determined to use this period for reconciliation, so that working groups can do their job. If we are to be responsible before the state and the citizens, we need to find solutions to current issues, and it would not be good at all if we destroy the current positive and successful numbers in the economy with a snap election,” Zaev said, adding that he would accept the opposition’s suggestions for distribution of the cases processed by the Special Public Prosecution (SPO) to suitable departments of the Basic Public Prosecution (PPO) and for the Council of Public Prosecutors to select and appoint the Head of PPO. Later on Monday, representatives of the working groups of the government and the opposition for negotiations over the Law on PPO had a meeting in the government. After the meeting, VMRO-DPMNE MP and members of the opposition’s working group Antonijo Milososki told reporters the meeting was good and constructive. “We managed to reach agreements over the processes for funding of prosecutors, as well as for increase of responsibilities of prosecutors,” Milososki stated briefly. However, VMRO-DPMNE vice-president Aleksandar Nikolovski commented later on Monday that VMRO-DPMNE will support the adoption of the Law on PPO only once their demand for snap election is fulfilled, and that the party is ready to stage protests in the streets if this demand of theirs is not met by the government.
