Geer: North Macedonia to Decide Whether They Accept French Proposal

EU Ambassador David Geer said that it is up to North Macedonia whether to accept the new revised French proposal for lifting official Sofia’s veto for the start of the EU accession processes or not. “It is up to the country to make the decision, through dialogue and in a peaceful atmosphere. The proposal is of course a compromise, about which we’ve heard a lot over the past few weeks, with some evaluations being fair, while other being far from the truth. This is a rather emotional debate, which in fact should be initiated by the EU itself. Damage has been done, mainly due to the belated improvements of the enlargement processes. North Macedonia has achieved a lot and realised great progress, but the EU failed to start the accession talks, resulting with frustration among the public and decrease of the trust in the entire process,” Geer said. The European Commission (EC) came out with similar positions, with EC Spokesperson Ana Pisonero stating at a press conference that it is up to North Macedonia to make the decision. “Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski announced a broad debate and consultations over the French proposal, a process already started in Skopje, and the ultimate decision will be a sovereign one by official Skopje,” Pisonero said.
