On Monday, Philip Reeker, US European Command Civilian Deputy and Political Advisor to the Commander, said at a conference in Skopje that the Prespa Agreement had opened Macedonia’s path to NATO membership and further European integration. The former Ambassador to Skopje also added that the success of the name deal proved what hard work and compromise could achieve “when leaders display such leadership”. The same day, Reeker held a meeting with PM Zoran Zaev. At the press-conference after the meeting, Zaev said Macedonia remained a stable strategic partner of the US. Reeker once again praised the name deal. “With the Prespa Agreement and the tremendous things you’ve accomplished through that, we now see a very clear road to North Macedonia becoming the 30th NATO member of the NATO Alliance,” he pointed out. The next US Acting Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs held a meeting with FM Nikola Dimitrov, too. They exchanged views on the current situation in both Macedonia and the region. According to Dimitrov, Reeker’s appointment is good news for the region, Europe and Trans-Atlantic community. According to Reeker, his country will continue to actively support the region on the road to EU and NATO integration. In addition, Reeker also held a meeting with VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski that focused on the current political and economic situation in the country, as well as the realisation of its strategic goals. At the meeting, Mickoski fiercely criticised SDSM’s actions in many areas. NATO membership and European integration is a key factor for stability in the region, with support contributing to those goals being achieved being necessary, Mickoski and Reeker agreed. The former Ambassador to Skopje met the Deputy PM for European Affairs, Bujar Osmani, and the Deputy PM for Economic Affairs, Koco Angjusev, as well.
